Planet Mars

This mosaic of Mars is a compilation of images captured by the Viking Orbiter 1. The center of the scene shows the entire Valles Marineris canyon system, over 3,000 km long and up to 8 km deep. The Viking orbiters were launched in 1975 and were the first missions to have landers on the surface of Mars. The orbiters captured thousands of photos while the landers took photos and completed experiments on the chemical makeup of the soils.
