  The Planet Venus

Venus

The Magellan spacecraft took this global view of the surface of Venus in 1991. Additional data from an earlier Pioneer and Venera orbiters have been used to fill in some portions of the image. The Magellan spacecraft was launched in 1989 and arrived at Venus in 1990. It used radar to penetrate the thick atmosphere and map the surface of the planet.
