Keywords for Review

Methane: Methane is an organic compound with the formula CH4. While we don’t have a lot of methane in our atmosphere, Saturn’s moon Titan has an atmosphere and lakes filled with methane. We use methane in the form of natural gas for cooking and heating.

Gas Giant: Gas giants are the large gaseous planets of our Solar System. Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus are all gas giants. They may also be called Jovian giants. As we discover planets in other systems, we are finding many gas giants across the galaxy.

Magnetic Field: The magnetic field that surrounds the Earth protects it from the solar winds given off by the Sun. The swirling molten core of iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni) creates the field through the dynamo effect. You may also see the term geomagnetic field.

Metallic Hydrogen: A form of hydrogen (H) you will read about when you study gas giants such as Jupiter. When extreme pressures are applied to hydrogen, it can take a liquid form. The swirling metallic hydrogen is able to act as a conductor and astronomers believe it creates Jupiter’s magnetic field through the dynamo effect.

Galileo: Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer who was the first to study the moons of Jupiter with his telescope in 1610. The Galileo mission was sent by NASA in 1989 to study Jupiter and its moons.
